Skylight Installation Fail

Buying a home that has skylights? Then this post is to help you understand what may be found when inspecting skylights on your home.

This loose skylight was discovered during my roof inspection on a 2-story house in Santa Clarita California. The skylight was never mounted with screws and was not sealed with an approved sealant/caulking. A loose skylight can lead to rain water entering the building and damaging the surrounding building materials such as drywall, wood etc. I have seen mold issues caused by leaking skylights on other homes in the past.

Another negative result from a loose skylight is the loss of heating and cooling escaping thru the skylight, this condition can also allow outside air to enter the building causing unpleasant indoor air quality.

Any roof penetration needs to be installed in a professional manner by a qualified contractor, most skylight problems are the result of non-qualified contractors installing them.
